Welcome! I am excited to offer Alexander Technique sessions in my studio.
Alexander Technique is a method to reduce muscular tension and improve overall function, ease and quality of movement. It has been proven to help back pain and manage pain in other areas as well. It is popular with musicians and actors because it can relieve the stress of repetitive motions and improve physical presence, but it also is used by anyone who spends hours at a computer, or has experienced an injury that has impacted their sense of balance or movement patterns.
Alexander Technique lessons usually consist of "chair work" and "table work." In the chair, I can show you subtly different ways to complete everyday movements in order to help you change movement habits and form new ones. We will explore the ideas of direction, which can help reorganize your coordination, and inhibition, which can give you the space to choose the quality of your next action when confronted with a stimulus. On the table, we can work together to release muscular tension and both broaden and lengthen chronically tight areas of your body.

My Alexander Technique Journey
I started taking Alexander Technique lessons after sustaining a repetitive strain injury while playing violin at age sixteen. To be honest, it wasn't what worked for me at the time and I didn't return to the Technique until my NEXT violin-related injury when I was in my early 20s. I chose to earn my doctorate in violin from the University of Colorado at Boulder because there was a strong wellness program at the school. I took Alexander Technique classes there and eventually found a private teacher.
While researching what to write for a thesis, I found an Alexander Technique teacher in the Netherlands who custom buids equipment for violinists and violists using ergonomic principles. Her name is Crissman Taylor and I KNEW I had to go study with her. I wrote a bunch of grants and got a bunch of money and went and studied with her for a year. I ended up writing my doctoral thesis on research I did there. This is the website that sent me to her.
After returning to the U.S., I knew I wanted to study the Alexander Technique. So I moved to the Bay Area to freelance and attend school. That's right! I completed a doctorate and then went immediately back to school.
I graduated from the Alexander Educational Center in 2022. My certification is accredited through the American Society of the Alexander Technique, and reflects the completion of a rigorous 1600 hour training program. Since graduating, I have assisted with the Alexander Technique classes at the San Francisco Conservatory as well as incorporating the practice into my violin teaching.
I work with musicians and people who need help managing pain.
